Amazon launches SMS-based Alexa shopping agent

After blocking Muse, Amazon now lets users text Alexa to help them shop

AI guide

Amazon has announced an SMS-based Alexa AI shopping agent that allows users to search for products, add items to their cart, and place orders via text messages using natural language. The text agent also supports managing shopping lists, tracking prices, comparing prices across the web, checking order status, and searching for similar items by sending photos, with plans to gradually introduce personalized product recommendations. Currently in limited testing with select invited users in the U.S., the feature offers a waitlist for others and is slated for a broader rollout in the coming weeks.

Why it matters

The move showcases the e-commerce giant's shift toward deploying in-house, native text-based shopping agents after cracking down on third-party agent scraping.
