Microsoft Research Releases PDD Kit: Securing Agent-Generated Code with Formal Verification
Formally verifying agent-written full-stack web apps with PDD Kit
Microsoft Research, in collaboration with GitHub Next, has unveiled PDD Kit, a research prototype designed to ensure coding agents strictly adhere to user design intent through formal verification. Introducing the Proof-Driven Development (PDD) paradigm, the tool converts natural language requirements into formal specifications written in Verus, a verification language for Rust. Agents then generate both the code and mathematical proofs, which are deterministically verified by machines across all possible inputs via Verus and the Z3 solver.
Addressing the challenge of reviewing massive volumes of code generated by coding agents line by line, the tool shifts the review focus to natural language intent and formal specifications, providing a practical engineering paradigm to mitigate generative code drift.
